Face oils are all the rage at the moment, and for good reason. Normally, we have emulsions that are really good for everyday wear, they are light and easy to use. They sink in really quickly so that you can go about your day to day business without having to wait. So what is the deal with a face oil?
Simply. Sometimes, and in some cases, all the time, our skin needs a boost –sometimes concetrated botanical formulations and extracts are what are needed to bring it back in balance.
For me, all I need is a moisturiser and I am good to go, however for others, it isnt enough and extra lipids on the skin are needed.
Furthermore, because of the structure of the skin, oil soluble actives can potentially penetrate deeper and be even more active.
Thought processes behind this formulation
When I was thinking about formulating this oil, I wanted it to be good for all skin types including mature skin. It needed to have actives that support the ageing process, but I also wanted it to help with common dry and inflammatory skin conditions. In effect it needed to be multi-functional. For me ‘mature’ is not a skin type as such but part of a spectrum because you can have hormonal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive and acneic skintypes under the umberella of ‘mature’. I also wanted it to be good for women in their twenties to fifties in particular. For this reason it needed to be light but contain some great potent ingredients.
To be multifuntional and minimalist I had to use raw materials that were multifunctional too and ones that would work well together to bring about results. It also needed to be designed to be used as a standalone product or paired with The Daily Rejuvenator.
So how do we use the Facial Elixir?
If I use the Elixir it is normally when I feel my skin is in need of extra help or it is a bit drier than normal. This usually happens for me in the winter months. It also comes in handy for when I have hormonal break outs. Either I use a few drops under my normal moisturiser or on its own as a night time skin treat.
So what makes this so special?
When you first open the bottle you will notice the scent. Like the Daily Rejuvenator, I have used Cabbage Rose, Frankincense Carterii and added Geranium to the mix . These three oils work well together scentwise. The fixed oil Blackseed has a peppery and almost woodsy scent that seems to fix the essential oil blend and add a kind of medicinal quality. Traditionally all of the chosen essential oils are used for mature skin types and geranium is also great for acne prone skin too. Frankincense has a very grounding and honest scent but is fresh and lemonlike at the same time – mentallly, it aids concentration but for the skin it has antiseptic and disinfectant properties, again great for skin prone to hormonal breakouts. Rose is a classic beauty oil, it has also been found to be active against killing some types of bacteria. Some research has suggested that it is a powerful penetration enhancer so it will increase skin permeability, potentially allowing actives to get to the lower levels of the epidermis. This combination of essential oils blended with the natural aromas of the vegetable oils, really smell like it is doing good for your skin.
How does it feel?
A few drops of oil will be absorbed almost instantly. This is thanks to a combination of speciality fixed oils used. So what are they?
Prickly pear oil is a light spreading oil that is high in anti-oxidants so will help protect against the ravages of city life and weather. It is easily absorbed in the skin and thought to brighten and tone. This combined with Watermelon seed oil, Evening Primrose and Borage will add much needed essential fatty acids thought to support the skin and help with inflammatory and dry skin conditions. All these oils are special but there are two of significant ingredients in this formulation that in smaller quantities can have real benefits for the skin. So what are they?
Blackseed or nigella sativa – This is a very special oil. It has been used tradtiionally in the middle east internally to help treat a variety of illnesses and externally to help alleviate discomfort caused by skin inflammation. Not much is known about this oil and indeed most accounts of its use in skincare are anecdotal, but its wide and historical use could suggest that there is something quite unique about its make up. What we do know is it is made up of 8 out of the 9 essential amino acids so will help the skins natural protective and restorative mechanisms. One of those nutrients is crystaliine nigellone, a particulalrly strong anti inflammatory. As such has the potential to help tone down any redness from blemishes and will help protect the skin from premature ageing.
Rosehip Co2 Extract – I have added a healthy amount of rosehip Co2 extract. Rosehip oil generally has a short shelf life and would have an impact on the overall perishability of the product, however when Rosehip is supercritically extracted its shelf life dramatically increases so that it stays fresh for far longer. Furthermore Rosehip Co2 has some very special properties. Not only is it medium spreading and sinks in well but it is a natural source of trans-retinoic acid and vitamin C so will have benefitical effects on discolouration caused by acne scars or hyperpigmentation and will help even out skin tone.
All together this makes our face oils exquisite however there is one final ingredient that sets this formulation apart from the rest. So, what is this special ingredient?
Spilanthes Flower Extract
Spilanthes flower extract , sold under the trade name Gatuline® In-tense is an oily extract of the flower. It grows in subtropical regions and known commonly as Paracress, toothplant and electric daisy. It is not surprising it has these names as its bark is thought to treat toothache and other oral problems. This flower, which tastes citrusy, is also used as a flavour enhancer in food. Its tincture, when taken internally is thought to increase immunity. So how does it help our skin?
As we age skin loses elasticity and firmness, cell turnover slows down and collagen production decreases which in turn leads to an increase in the appearance of wrinkles and sagging. Spilanthes, when applied topically helps strengthen the skins cellular matrix which firms and tightens giving instant renewal and rejuvenating effects.
This botanical formulation is probably the most intensive treatment in the MBotanicals range. It can be used on its own or independently depending on what your skin needs. Use all the time or use when your skin needs some extra attention. It feels tingly on the skin and you can almost feel that it is working hard on all those problem skincare zones. I love the versatility with this product as I can use it when I have enough time to give my face that special spa treatment!
